P4.org Is Moving to Zulip for Messaging!

Our community messaging platform is transitioning from Slack to Zulip!

https://p4lang.zulipchat.com/

Zulip is an open-source messaging platform used by open-source language communities such as Rust or Julia and many more. We are transitioning to Zulip because of a variety of benefits offered by the platform:

  • Zulip integrates well with other platforms. We have added migrations with our Github, Discourse, and our mailing lists. This will make it easier for you to see what is going on in the P4 Language community.
  • Zulip is accessible. Zulip can be used without a login and is web-searchable, making our community more widely available to others.
  • Zulip is open-source, developer-friendly and evolving quickly. We can ensure that our messaging history stays preserved and readily make changes to the platform.
  • Zulip provides generous support to open-source communities such as ours. This includes favorable pricing and long-term dedicated support.

Making the Switch

For a smooth transition we will retain our Slack channel over the next couple of months until we eventually turn it off. We understand you might have questions about the transition. Here’s a quick guide to get you started:

If you already have a Slack account associated with our P4 Slack your account will be automatically migrated to Zulip. You’ll receive a separate email with instructions on activating your Zulip account soon. To directly activate your account please use https://p4lang.zulipchat.com/accounts/password/reset/.

If you’re new to our community, you can create a new account directly on our P4 Zulip instance. We will soon make the signup link to our Zulip instance available on our website.

Getting Familiar with Zulip:

Zulip offers many similar features to Slack, but the interface might feel different. To help you navigate the application, we recommend checking out Zulip’s official getting started guide. Zulip also offers a step-by-step walkthrough for first-time users of the application.

Stay tuned for further updates and information about the migration process. In the meantime, feel free to reach out on p4-discuss@p4.org or message Fabian directly if you have any questions.
